The-Dream’s “Rockin’ That Thang” is far and away my favorite Top 40 track at the moment, usurping Lady Gaga’s ode to pretentious, disinterested women, “Poker Face,” from its two week reign as the song I religiously hunted for on the radio and MTV.
The-Dream (a.k.a. Terius Youngdell Nash) is most notably known as the superstar producer responsible for Rhianna’s “Umbrella” and Beyonce’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it),” but came out with his first full length, Love vs. Money, earlier this year. “Rocking That Thang” was the record’s first single, and such a seriously sensuous and sexual song deserved a serious line up of MC’s to do the remix justice.
So yes, Ludacris, Fabolous, Juelz Santana and Rick Ross all contribute top-notch rhymes over The-Dream’s sweat storm of a synth line with devestating results. Highlights include Juelz Santana steping up to the track with his innate, casual cockiness, to deliver this stunner of a verse, “So get another shot of that Ciroq in ya/cuz I’m gon be rockin ya/ treatin you like the first lady,/I’ll put my Barack in ya.” I am pretty astounded more rappers don’t mention Obama in their songs (although Rick Ross does repeatedly in his 8 bars) and, as my friend James mentioned, if “I’ll put my Barack in ya” isn’t already slang, it better be now.
Ludacris is arguably the best rapper of the 00’s to be featured on tracks that aren’t his, so its only fitting he’s the headliner of this operation. Luda manages to drop the most surprisingly sincere verse of undulating desire this side of Lord Byron with “melt yo imagination and mold it into reality/your heart’s my art gallery, gurrll.”
R&B and hip-hop does not, I repeat, does not get much better than this.
